The 🌐PKM (Russian: Пулемёт Калашникова Модернизированный, Pulemyot Kalashnikova Modernizirovanny, English: Kalashnikov Machine gun Modernized) is a 7.62×54mmR general-purpose machine gun designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The original PK machine gun was introduced in 1961 and then the improved PKM in 1969 to replace the SGM and RP-46 machine guns in Soviet service. It remains in use as a front-line infantry and vehicle-mounted weapon with Russian Armed Forces. The PK has been exported extensively and produced in several other countries under license.

Insurgency: Sandstorm[]

The PKM is a machine gun featured in Insurgency: Sandstorm. It is available to Insurgent Gunners in every game mode.

The PKM is a light machine gun that is a relatively cheap and reliable choice. It shares the same cost of three credits with the RPK and the Security M249 and M60, with all working as a step up from the cheaper rifles. They all give Gunners extreme suppressive capabilities for a decent price.

The PKM chambers 7.62x54mmR, the same round as the Mosin-Nagant, and utilizes this round in an automatic fashion. This round carries enough energy to one-shot enemies consistently, and the PKM comes equipped with 100-round boxes full of them. The 7.62x54 bullet is able to travel at 815 m/s, which allows it to engage at considerable range. This complements the heavy suppression role that the PKM fills. Firing at a very controllable 652 RPM, similar to the M60E4, the recoil of the PKM is relatively tame, even when firing in a standing or crouched position.

While in a prone position, however, the pre-attached bipod braces the weapon when against a place to mount it, like a short wall or a window. When mounted, the bipod will almost negate any recoil, making the gun spray a laser of bullets towards enemies. When not mounted, the gun will take a long time to raise due to its weight, and the recoil, while not unmanageable, will still kick hard.

With these attachments in mind, there isn't much variety when it comes to attachments, but due to the cheap cost of the PKM, that really isn't much of a problem. Muzzle attachments, scopes, and a laser module are the only choices when it comes to the PKM, as the bipod replaces the underbarrel slot. Adding a flash hider will do great for concealing the PKM's muzzle flash, something that will definitely give it away in certain situations. Even better is the suppressor, which hides both the muzzle flash and also the unique and booming sound of it firing, but will take up a lot of space on the front of the barrel.

Trivia[]

  • For the sake of simplicity, the in-game PKM is depicted with a disintegrating ammunition belt, while the real-life weapon uses a non-disintegrating belt.
  • Unlike other open-bolt MGs, the PKM actually stores 1 round in an intermediate position before firing, so its ammunition capacity should technically be x+1.
