The MDR (Micro Dynamic Rifle) is a modular ambidextrous bullpup rifle that can be kitted out with attachments, such as barrels, magazines, and scopes, adapted to any situation. It is designed by the American company Desert Tech. First showcased in the Shot Show in 2014, it was supposed to enter production in the following year. It was only until 2017, when the public regarded it as a piece of vaporware, that it had started to be produced.
A military variant of the MDR, dubbed the 'Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR)', was submitted in 2018 as an entry to the US Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon Program, but wasn't one of the finalists. The MDRx (Micro Dynamic Rifle eXtreme) is the second generation of the original MDR, featuring a better trigger system, gas operation, and a wider variety of calibers.
The MDR appears in Insurgency Sandstorm, introduced in Operation: Accolade, a free update to the game.
Insurgency: Sandstorm[]
Equipped with the 7.62x51mm NATO Cartridge, the MDR is one of the heaviest hitting rifles, with the ability to kill targets at very long ranges with one shot, even to extremities like the legs. The MDR is able to punch straight through armor and kill most enemies with one or two shots. This allows the MDR to be a very lethal implement on the battlefield.
The MDR fires at 652 RPM, making it very controllable even for a 7.62x51mm Battle Rifle. Because of this, full-auto fire is exceptionally controllable and effective at picking off targets at mid range. Furthermore, semi automatic will be more precise, and the MDR can perform very well at long distances. With a muzzle velocity of 960 m/s, the MDR rivals some of the sniper rifles for long range. The 7.62x51mm cartridge can also easily punch through all but the thickest of walls. Most times, the MDR can kill enemies that are behind cover. Also, due to the bullpup design of the MDR, there is a lot less barrel length in front, making CQB very manageable. The weapon fires fast enough and packs enough punch to kill multiple hostiles within a magazine.
All of this performance comes at a hefty cost, however. The MDR comes stock for 6 credits, placing it among the most expensive weapons in Sandstorm. Because of the expensive cost, there is a lot less variety to work with. Scopes are great on the MDR, making precise shots at any range a lot easier. The extended magazine increases capacity from 20 to 30, but will cost another 2 credits on top of the already expensive rifle. Muzzle attachments, like all of the other weapons, increase the barrel length slightly but offer benefits such as lower horizontal recoil via the compensator or less firing report via the Flash hider or Suppressor. Grips, such as the Loading Grip, will help hasten the reload even more, or the Recoil Grip that decreases the already low vertical recoil.
Equipping any combination of these on the MDR, however, will cost more than the conventional particle accelerator, meaning that any operator will be running very light in terms of grenades, secondaries, carriers, or armor.
