The WAKM (Russian: Модернизированный Автомат Калашникова, modernizirovanny Avtomat Kalashnikova; English: Modernized Kalashnikov Automatic Rifle) is a 7.62mm assault rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. It is a common modernized variant of the AK-47 rifle developed in the 1940s.

Introduced into service with the Soviet Army in 1959, the AKM is the most ubiquitous variant of the entire AK series of firearms and it has found widespread use with most member states of the former Warsaw Pact and its African and Asian allies as well as being widely exported and produced in many other countries. It was officially replaced in Soviet frontline service by the AK-74 in the late 1970s, but remains in use worldwide.

A folding stock variant, known as the AKMS (S – складной, skladnoy; folding) sports an under-folding metal shoulder stock, replacing the AKM's wooden solid stock. This should be the model in-game.

On average, in all the small arms in the world, ~20% are Avtomat Kalashnikova derivatives.

Insurgency[]

The AKM is an assault rifle featured in Insurgency.

It is a powerful rifle that does high damage at range, though it has the slowest rate of fire of any assault rifle. It costs 0 supply points and is the only free of charge primary weapon in the game (with the Makarov and Model 10 being the only other free weapons in the game).

Insurgency: Sandstorm[]

The AKM is an assault rifle featured in Insurgency: Sandstorm.

The AKM is a 7.62x39mm caliber rifle given to Insurgents for a 3 credit cost. It is the cheapest automatic and 7.62x39mm rifle for Insurgents as well, making the AK a very solid choice for a great price. Its power, controllability, and price make it a prime option for a very well-rounded rifle at any range.

The AKM's power comes from its 7.62x39 cartridge, which is very effective at dispatching enemy targets, even at longer distances. Most shots to the upper torso will result in a kill, and hitting anywhere else will severely injure opponents. Penetration with the AK is solid, with the 7.62 cartridge able to penetrate most solid objects and walls with relative ease, at the loss of minor damage afterwards. Its penetration also pretty much negates armor, cutting through even the heaviest of plates. The AKM fires at a very controllable 600 rpm, making it fast enough to deal with targets efficiently as well as maintaining recoil and its magazine capacity.

At range, the AKM struggles a little, but that doesn't detract from the performance. Sniping with the AK isn't its strong suit, as the much more modern 5.56x45 caliber is much more streamlined for that. Also, the even bigger 7.62x51mm found on the Advisor ACE 52, TAVOR7, or the new MDR are much more reliable for long-range engagements.

Because the AKM is so cheap, Insurgents are able to afford quite a lot of attachments without sacrificing most of their other gear. Things such as the Recoil grip, powerful magnification optics, and even the drum mag are readily available with no relative detraction to the amount of equipment brought on any loadout. The AK's ease of use also makes it a prime choice for an equipment loadout. with a stock AK allowing for more credits to be used on things like grenades, carriers, armor, or even secondaries and gas masks for Security units on modes such as Domination or FFA, where there aren't faction based weapon selection.

Trivia[]

General

  • If the AKM has a grip attached it ultimately transforms the AKM into a PM Md. 65. A Romainian assault rifle based on the AKM but with a wooden grip on the lower handguard.

Insurgency

  • Despite its designation in-game, it is modeled after the AKMS.
  • The AKM has had its animations remain the same throughout the games' life cycle; the AK-74 and AKS-74U were revisited with new animations in later updates.
  • The AKM is the only primary weapon that costs 0 supply points in the vanilla game without theater modifications.

Insurgency Sandstorm

  • The AKM in game is specifically the AKMN model, as it has a side rail for mounting optics such as the 1x OKP-7 in its dovetail configuration rather than its Picatinny configuration.
    • The side rail modelled on the AKM is actually based on the later pattern rail found on the AK-74N.
  • Equipping any sight that isn't the PKA-S, OKP-7, or Kobra will place the optic on an adapter above the receiver rather than on the specialized AK one. This is similar to the other pattern AKs, such as the AKS-74U, PKM, AS VAL, and even the Mosin-Nagant.
