The 🌐Steyr AUG (Armee-Universal-Gewehr) is an Austrian 5.56×45mm NATO bullpup assault rifle, designed in the 1960s. In production since 1978, it is the standard small arm of the Austrian Bundesheer and various national police units. Its variants have also been adopted by the armed forces of dozens of countries.

Insurgency: Sandstorm[]

The AUG A3 is a assault rifle featured in Insurgency: Sandstorm. It was added in the Operation Breakaway update.

The AUG A3 is a 3 credit rifle chambered in 5.56x45mm given to Security Riflemen. It, along with the G36K, both function as the cheapest that Security Forces will have to pay to get an effective automatic weapon. Its long range, easy to control recoil, and cheap price make the AUG A3 a prime option for a very well-rounded rifle at any range. It performs similarly to the Insurgent AKM, as the AUG is basically a Security AK.

Fed from the streamlined 5.56x45mm cartridge, the AUG A3 is able to kill opponents quite easily, only requiring 1-2 bullets to kill, even through protective vests. The AUG A3 fires at a very controllable 600 RPM, making it fast enough to deal with targets efficiently as well as maintaining recoil and its magazine capacity. The AUG's rounds also fly through the air at insane speeds, besting even some of the Sniper rifles in terms of velocity. With a high velocity, these rounds also penetrate most walls with relative ease. Both of these stats combined mean that the AUG A3 can be fielded as a pseudo-DMR to an extent.

Because the AUG is so cheap, users are able to afford quite a lot of attachments without sacrificing most of their other gear. Powerful magnification optics, especially the specialized 1.5x-1x A1 Scope and the 3x A3 Scope, can be equipped to increase precision. Grips are a matter of preference, whether you want to decrease the already minimal recoil with a Recoil Grip or improve the AUG's close quarters performance with an Aiming or Quick Draw grip. A Loading Grip may also be handy when using the extended magazines.

It's also good to note that the extended magazines on the AUG don't just increase the capacity by five rounds like most of the other weapons in Sandstorm, but instead increase capacity by a whopping 12 bullets. Also note that though the AUG and other Western rifles chamber the same 5.56 round, STANAG Magazines cannot be scavenged off of corpses, as the AUG uses clear polymer magazines.

In short, the AUG's ease of use also makes it a prime choice for an equipment loadout, allowing for more credits to be used on a variety of other things. Grenades, carriers, armor, or even secondaries and gas masks for Security units can be used on modes such as Domination or FFA, where there aren't faction based weapon selection.
